Jaivon Smallwood had a game-high eight catches for a career-high 117 yards including a touchdown as the Virginia State University football team captured its first win on the season over Kentucky State University, 16-13 at Alumni Stadium Saturday evening.

A 20-yard rushing touchdown from junior Trey Johnson capped off a seven-play 80-yard drive at the 12:15 mark left in the ballgame, making it a 16-7 contest.

KSU responded again by capping off an 80-yard 15-play drive at the 5:00 mark in the contest, making it 16-13.

The Trojans began the second half capping off a five play, 63 yards drive with a field goal. Making it 9-0 ballgame with 9:57 left in the third quarter.

The Thorobreds responded going 90 yards in five plays with 00:14 seconds left in the third quarter, making it a 9-7 contest off a six-yard run by Jacquise Lockett.

VSU opened the contest holding KSU to a quick three and out before scoring on its opening drive; taking the ball 54 yards in three-plays at the 10:38 mark in the first quarter on a pass from sophomore

Both teams had rough times moving the ball in the first half. The Trojans lost two fumbles; while forcing one of their own in the half.

Brandon Robinson led the Trojans defensively, with seven tackles, including two sacks and three tackles for a loss. Johnson finished the game with a career-high 84 yards on 14 carries for VSU, offensively.

The Trojans will host Fayetteville State University in its conference opener Saturday, Sept. 27 in Rogers Stadium at 2 p.m.
