Atlanta, Ga. (August 18, 2026) – The Black College Football Hall of Fame (BCFHOF) announced the 2026 Watch List for the Black College Football Player of the Year Award, presented annually to the most outstanding football player from a Historically Black College & University (HBCU).

Virginia State University redshirt-sophomore quarterback Rahsaan Matthews Jr. has earned a spot on this year's prestigious watch list.

Matthews Jr. enters the 2026 season following an impressive 2025 campaign. He passed for 2,361 yards and 20 touchdowns while adding 439 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground. His all-around performance helped him earn a spot on the All-CIAA Second and Rookie teams last season.

Matthews Jr. was also selected to the All-CIAA Preseason Team heading into the 2026 season.

Four finalists for the Black College Football Player of the Year Award will be announced following the conclusion of the season. The winner will be announced during halftime of the 2027 Allstate HBCU Legacy Bowl and presented with the prestigious Deacon Jones Trophy.

The 2027 Allstate HBCU Legacy Bowl is scheduled for Saturday, February 27, 2027, in Atlanta, Georgia, and will be broadcast live on NFL Network.
