Box Score MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Virginia State volleyball team suffered a 3-1 decision to the Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State on Sunday afternoon in the Helms Center.
As day two of play concluded, Fayetteville State overpowered Virginia State. The Trojans fell to Fayetteville State 27-25 and 25-18 in the first and second set, but Virginia State surged back to edge out the Lady Broncos in the third set, 25-19.The Trojans would go on to drop the fourth and final set, 25-23.
In the first set, neither teams were able to establish a solid lead making the contest close. Two errors from the Trojans secured the 27-25 first set win for Fayetteville State. The Lady Broncos would hold on to the momentum through the duration of the second set with ease, clinching the 25-18 victory.
However, the Trojans answered back in the third set, pulling away early and maintaining the lead the entire set en-route to the 25-19 win. The fourth set was an intense battle through with the score tied at 22.
FSU's Samira Louis tallied kills on the next two out of three plays to steal the 25-23 victory for the Lady Broncos.
Dierdre Carter paced Virginia State with 11 kills in the setback while
Diamond Simpson notched a match-high of 22 digs for the Trojans.
Louis led all players in the contest with 21 kills while Leah Mackley tallied 40 assists for Fayetteville State.
The Trojans return home with 3-3 record on the season and 1-2 in CIAA play while Fayetteville State improved to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the league.
VSU returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 18 when they host the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State at 6 p.m.
