TROJAN VOLLEYBALL TOP SHAW, FALL TO ST. AUGUSTINE’S

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Virginia State volleyball team split day one of the 2014 CIAA Round-Up, sweeping the Lady Bears of Shaw (3-0) but dropping a (3-1) decision to the Lady Falcons of St. Augustine's on Saturday afternoon. The split puts the Trojans 3-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Virginia State used 14 kills from Dierdre Carter and six from Imani Wood to secure a 25-16 victory in set one, 25-20 win in set two, followed by a 25-11 set three victory.

The Trojans pounced on the Lady Bears early in the first set and although Shaw fought back with a vengeance to keep the second set close, they were unable to recover from the early deficit from the Trojans had built.  During the third set, Virginia State boasted a 12-4 lead cruising past the Lady Bears to clinch the third set of match one, 25-11.

In the second match of the day, St. Augustine's edged the Trojans to pick up their first win of the season. The Lady Falcons took control in the first and second sets of the match, 26-24 and 25-16 before the momentum would be shifted in  favor of the Trojans during the third set when they charged back to edge a 26-24 win.

However, that would be the only set Virginia State would win as the Lady Falcons proved to be too much to take the fourth set and the match, 25-18.

The Trojans had a slow start in the contest, and were unable to recover. 36 errors played a role in the loss as the Trojans had 15 come from just the second set alone.

St. Augustine's Olivia Porter led all players with 14 kills while also turning in six digs on the afternoon followed by Mikayla Pettyjohn with eight.  Marley Parker led all players in the contest with 20 digs while Meghan Mahon had 18.

Dierdre Carter led Virginia State with a team-high 10 kills with Brianna Small collecting eight kills. Adriana Hazou and Dierdre Carter had 17 and 11 digs, respectively.

The Trojans return to action tomorrow for their last match of the CIAA Round-Up, Sept. 14 against Fayetteville State. First serve is slated for 11 a.m. on court two.
