Baseball Redeems Themselves for the CIAA Finals

ETTRICK, VA- The Virginia State University Baseball team had a hit and miss day in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Baseball Championships.

The Trojans took a hard 13-3 loss to the Winston-Salem State University Rams in game one on April 18, but put in overtime defeating Chowan University 21-2 in the elimination game.  

In the game against the Rams, freshman David Markins (Colonial Heights, VA) came to bat at the top of the fourth inning with the bases loaded and two outs on the board. After he received two strikes, Markins kicked it into high gear, bring two Trojans home off of his base hit.

David's big brother, junior Joshua Markins (Colonial Heights, VA) would be the remaining Trojan to put points on the board.

Junior Zachery Jordan (Chesterfield, VA) was given the loss after four strikeouts, nine errors and one walk.

In elimination game against the Chowan Hawks, the Trojans dominated the field with the home team advantage.

Virginia State received 18 RBI's, with junior Zachery Jordan (Chesterfield, VA), senior Percy Evans (Cary, NC) and sophomore Colton Gunn (Dinwiddie, VA) bringing in three each. Sophomore Tashaun Taylor (Richmond, VA) was not far behind with two RBI's.

Taylor and junior Nicholas Christopher (Dinwiddie, VA) were tied, leading the Trojans with four runs apiece.
 
Junior pitcher Joshua Markins (Colonial Heights, VA) is credited with the win after pitching nine innings with seven strikeouts.

The win over the Hawks advance the Trojans to the CIAA Finals on Saturday April 19 at 1:00pm to face the Winston-Salem State University Rams at Whaley Colbert Field.
