Bench Scoring Leads to Victory over Lincoln

Ettrick, VA – No. 13 Virginia State bench outscores their opponent's bench, 22-9 to win over Lincoln finishing their regular season with an undefeated record in the northern division of a perfect 10-0 on Saturday at Daniel Gymnasium.

The game was highlighted by the 2014 CIAA Player of the Year, ALL-CIAA, Lamesha Deal (Norfolk, VA) who reached her career milestone scoring her 1001 point at the 9:05 mark in the first half.

Deal led the Trojans in scoring with 18 points (4-12), grabbing nine rebounds, dishing five assist and collecting three steals. Jessica Lyons (Upper Marlboro, MD) tallied 16 points, dishing five assist and Cana Marriott (Wendell, NC) added a career high of 14 points, while snatching three steals.

The Trojans would jump on the scoreboard to lead first followed by a basket from Lincoln's Amani Clark. Tying the game twice, LU went on an 8-0 run led by Lincoln's Clark who had a total of 12 points to lead all scorers at the half. The Trojans would trail the Lady Lions at intermission, 25-28.

VSU found themselves trailing the Lady Lions by as many as 12 points from a 10-2 run to start the second half. The Trojans would turn their defense intensity up and ignite a 12-2 run putting VSU ahead for the remaining of the game to clinch the win, 75-64.

VSU shot 53.1 –percent (26-49) from the field, 55.6 –percent (5-9) from behind the arc and 69.2 –percent (18-26) from the free throw line.

Lincoln's Amani Clark led all scorers with 23 points to go along with four assists, five rebounds and two steals. Courtney Smith added 16 points and eight assist for the Lady Lions.

The win was the 14th straight victory for the Trojans and the team's 13th straight victory for the 2013-14 season in Daniel Gymnasium.   It has been a long time since the women's basketball team has won all their home games.

The Trojans as the No. 1 seed clinched a bye and will await the CIAA Tournament pairings, which will be announced Sunday, February 23.
