Murfreesboro, NC – No. 13 Virginia State women's basketball team defeats Chowan University on Monday night. The Trojans continue to improve their record of 22-1 overall and 13-1 in the CIAA. This win puts VSU on an impressive 12 game winning-streak.

Lamesha Deal (Norfolk, VA) led the Trojans in scoring with 15 points and collected six rebounds in the victory. Jessica Lyons (Upper Marlboro, MD) and Shakirah Gray (Philadelphia, PA) tallied 14 apiece.

The Trojans found themselves trailing the Hawks early in the game, as Chowan would go on a 14-6 run with 14:18 remaining. VSU never lost sight of the task at hand as they would take their first lead of the game, 28-26 from a good jumper by Pryncess Tate-Dublin (Suitland, MD) with 4:20 remaining in the first half.

VSU would lead at the half, 35-30 after a good three-pointer by Lyons who had 10 points following Deal's 12 points to lead all scores at intermission.

"We knew it was going to be a tough game, we knew they were going to come out hot and ready to play but when we stepped it up on defense and converted points off their turnovers that set the tone for us" stated Coach James Hill.

As the second half became underway the Trojans would pick up where they left off by a good basket from Gray however the Hawks would regain the lead only to lose it again after VSU made a run and never looked back securing its 12^th consecutive victory over the Hawks, 69-57.

In the game, VSU shot 47.1 –percent from the field, 35.7 –percent from behind the arc and 72.7 –percent from the free throw line.

The Trojans outscored Chowan in the paint, 32-18, and converted 15 points off of turnovers while adding 14 points off of fast breaks.

The Trojans return to the hardwood in Bowie, MD on Wednesday, February 19 as they take on the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
