No. 13 Virginia State Captures its 10th straight Victory over Chowan

ETTRICK, VA – Jessica Lyons (Upper Marlboro, MD) scored 12 points to lift the Trojans past Chowan on Wednesday, February 12 in Daniel Gymnasium.  The Trojans have won 12 consecutive home games in Daniel Gymnasium.

With the win, VSU improves to a 20-1 overall record and 11-1 in the CIAA conference record, while the Hawks of Chowan fall to 11-13 and 5-7 in league play.

Pryncess Tate-Dublin (Suitland, MD) would put the Trojans on the scoreboard first with an easy jumper. However, the Hawks would answer back with a three-pointer by Rachel Gostomski. The game was tied five times in the first half as the Trojans led in second chance points, fast breaks and points in the paint.

VSU trailed at the half by one going into the locker room, 21-22. Chowan had 15 points off the bench led by Alisha Mobley who led all scorers in the first half.

Coming into the game, Coach James Hill stated "As a team we must stay focused as well as discipline on defense.  In order for us to win, we must control the tempo of the game as well as rebound, only to allow them one shot on the offensive set."   That's exactly what his team did as the Trojans turned things around in the second half taking lead over the Hawks by as many as seven points.

Although Chowan made runs to come back, VSU's dominance on the offensive glass would not allow the Hawks to do so.  The Trojans made good off second chance shots to earned seven points and shot 58.3-percent from the free throw line over the Hawks 0.0-percent in the half.  With the Trojans intense defense they secured the win over the Hawks, 51-47.

VSU had two double-figure scorers in Lyons (12 points) and Tate-Dublin (10 points). Lamesha Deal (Norfolk, VA) would add nine points and eight rebounds respectively.

The Trojans will travel to Elizabeth City State University on Saturday, February 15 for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
