Trojans Net Seventh Straight Win

LINCOLN, Pa. –Senior Pryncess Tate- Dublin (Suitland, MD), senior Lamesha Deal (Norfolk, VA), and junior Cana Marriott (Wendell, NC) each scored double digits and combined for a total of 39 points during the Virginia State University women's basketball team's 67-53 victory over the Lincoln University Lady Lions on Saturday, February 1 inside Manuel Rivero Hall Main Gymnasium on the campus of Lincoln University.

Tate-Dublin finished the night with 14 points, shooting 5-of-6 from the field, 2-of-2 from three point land and 2-of-3 from the charity stripe while also contributing two rebounds.

Deal scored 13 points during the Trojans victory, shooting 4-of-10 from the field, 1-of-1 from the three point line and 4-of-6 from the free throw line. The 6-0 forward contributed a team-best nine rebounds, three steals, and two assists.

Marriott set her seasons-best with 12 points, shooting 5-of 9 from the field and 2-of 3 from behind the line. The newcomer contributed an additional three steals and two assists.
Cynitha Johnson of the Lady Lions scored her 1000th career point, shooting 4-of-8 from the field and 6-of 8 at the line, earning 14 points.
The Trojans trailed in the first minute of the contest, but immediately took the lead with a three point basket from Deal and continued on steady lead throughout the half.

Senior Alexandria Massado (Wilmington, DE) found Marriott with 6:33 left in the first frame knocking down the shot from behind the arc giving VSU the 25-14 lead heading into the last media timeout of the half.
Virginia State held Lincoln scoreless for the next three minutes. Lincolns Cynthia Johnson ended the Lady Lions drought by going to the line at the 3:12 mark.

As the first half buzzer sounded junior Jessica Lyons (Upper Marlboro, MD) made the last five points for the Trojans in the half, putting them on top 36-23 heading into the locker room.

Starting off the second twenty minutes the Trojans carried its defensive momentum from the first half back to the court as Tiffanie Adair (Spartanburg, SC) retrieved a rebound and picked up a quick basket.

Virginia State seized its largest lead of the game at the 4:58 mark after Adair grabbed a rebound to complete the layup, giving the Trojans a 15 point lead at 59-44.

The Trojans finished strong with a 67-53 win.

As a team, Virginia State shot 22-of-60 from the field (36.7 percent), 6-of-10 from behind the arc (60.0 percent) and 17-of-27 from the free throw line while also pulling down 49 rebounds, dishing 16 assists and collecting 13 steals.

This victory gave the Trojans their seventh straight win. They will be traveling to Raleigh, NC on Wednesday, February 5 to take on the St. Augustine's Falcons at 5:30pm.
