TROJANS PREVAIL IN SHOOTOUT WITH THE ECSU VIKINGS ON SENIOR NIGHT

Box Score ETTRICK, Va. – The Virginia State University volleyball team prevailed in a 3-2 shootout with the Elizabeth City State University Vikings, Friday evening on its Senior Night in Daniel Gymnasium. Three young ladies were honored (MiIndia Mansel, Brianna Small, and Imani Wood) in the pregame ceremony before the match began.

With the victory, the Trojans ended their regular season 15-4 overall and 12-4 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association; while ECSU ends its regular season 8-16 overall and 8-8 in conference play.

VSU senior night was as close to a movie ending as you could possibly get. Senior night is a night where the seniors enjoy playing their last game in front of their fellow classmates, last time playing in Daniels Gymnasium, and the last time being a part of the Trojans volleyball during the regular season..

The beginning of the game was not in favor of Virginia State. Elizabeth City came in with the mindset to ruin their senior night in which they almost did. ECSU dominated the first two matches beating the Trojans 25-20 and 25-23. In the first match Elizabeth City came out strong leading, 8-3. The Trojans began to cut the lead down, but the lead was too big for them to overcome.

The second game, Virginia State had an early lead but watched it slip away to lose the second match, 25-20. Going into the third match, the Trojans once again was in the lead early 10-6, but watched their lead diminish slowly. This time though they did not give the game away and finished off strong, dominating the rest of the match to win it, 25-15.

Match four, VSU took that same energy from match three and dominated the fourth match 25-13 to force a fifth match. The fifth match was by far the most dominating match of the game, beating the Vikings, 15-4.

Dierdre Carter led all players with 21 kills. With a strong group effort, the Trojans sent their graduating teammates away with a win in dramatic fashion coming back to win the game, 3-2.
