Box Score DURHAM, N.C.- It is a great time to be a Trojan, as the Virginia State University football team claimed the 2014 CIAA Championship Title on Nov. 15. The Trojans defeated the Rams of Winston-Salem State University with a final score of 21-17.
VSU football has not won the CIAA football championship since 1996.
Although this was the first time quarterback
Niko Johnson started in a game for the Trojans, he focused his strength on VSU offense. Johnson ran in a 25 yard touchdown with 2:59 left in the ball game, giving the Trojans a winning edge over the Rams. He finished the game with 76 yards on 13 carries and hitting on 12 of 19 passes for 125 yards. Johnson was voted VSU's game MVP.
The Trojans took advantage of the open opportunities, as the Rams had three fumbles throughout the game. The first WSSU fumble was recovered by
Dontrell Jones who ran in for a 69 yard touchdown to put the Trojans on the board. Elder Hudson gave VSU their second touchdown with 13:01 left in the half. The Rams got on the board minutes before half time, making the score 14-7.
Both teams were equally matched, as no one scored in the third quarter.
Despite the 10 points gained by the Rams in the fourth quarter, the Trojans and their fan helped rally for a win.
Kavon Bellamy was a key player for the Trojans as well, running for 68 yards and having two receptions for 48 yards.

Latrell Scott prepared the Trojans for the championship with their "business as usual" system. "We've been focused this entire season. I just wanted to make sure we weren't satisfied with just being here," said Scott.
The Trojans currently have a 9-2 overall record. After defeating WSSU, who was ranked fourth in the NCAA Div. II Super Region I, the top six teams in the region will advance to the NCAA Div. II playoffs. The 24-team playoff field will be announced Sunday at 5 p.m.
