FOOTBALL OUSTS THE LINCOLN, 63-7 SATURDAY AFTERNOON FOR HOMECOMING

Box Score ETTRICK, Va. – The Virginia State University football team ousted The Lincoln, 63-7, Saturday afternoon for Homecoming 2014 in Rogers Stadium in front of a record homecoming crowd of over 6,000 (CORRECTED) spectators.
 
With the victory, the Trojans rank first in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Northern Division and improved to 6-2 overall and 5-0 in league play; while the Lions drop to 1-7 overall and 0-5 in the conference.
 
The Trojans drove the field and scored on their opening drive, the first of nine touchdowns on the afternoon. The defense followed the offense's lead and created a turnover on the Lions' second possession as sophomore defensive end Devin Claiborne recovered a fumble on The Lincoln's 35 yard line.
 
By the end of the game, VSU's offense had racked up 387 yards, holding the Lions to 187 of its own.
 
Freshman Earl Hughes led the Trojans' offense with 120 rushing yards; including a 63-yard touchdown run. Junior Kavon Bellamy collected 94 yards on the ground; including three rushing scores; while freshman Carlton Campbell, III added an 82-yard rushing touchdown of his own. Junior Jaivon Smallwood registered four receptions for 62 yards and two touchdowns in the contest.
 
Senior Brandon Robinson led the defense with nine tackles; including a sack and two tackles for a loss.
 
VSU returns to action Saturday, Nov. 1 when it hosts Chowan University in Rogers Stadium for Senior Day at 2 p.m.
 
The VSU Athletic Department continues its' "1000 Cans, One Goal" campaign initiative at every home game through Friday, Nov. 21. The purpose of the initiative is to support the local food banks in helping feed the less fortunate during the holiday season. Donors are asked to either bring can goods to any VSU Athletic home game (football, basketball, volleyball, and/or cross-country) and/or drop your items off to the Athletic Department.
