TROJANS OUTLAST BLUES IN FIVE GAME SET

Box Score BLUEFIELD, W.V.-  The Virginia State volleyball team outlasted Bluefield State in five sets on Friday evening.
 
Dierdre Carter dominated the game with 19 kills to help the Trojans stand victorious (25-17, 20-25, 25-20, 17-25, and 15-13). This is the eighth consecutive win for the Trojans.
 
Virginia State improves to 12-4 overall, 9-3 in conference play while the Lady Blues drop to 11-13 on the season and 5-8 in ECAC league play.
 
The Trojans started the game off strong in the first set. Several mistakes from the Lady Blues gave the Trojans an advantage to win set one, 25-17.
 
In the second set, both teams rallied point for point keeping the score close. Although the Trojans fought hard, Bluefield took set two with a score of 20-25.
 
The Lady Blues came into set three ready for a double set win, but the Trojans bounced back with several last minute plays to dominate set three.
 
The Trojans lost momentum, letting Bluefield take another set four with a score of 17-25. There was no room for errors, as the Virginia State got back in the game with two final game changing plays to win the set and the game.
 
Brookie Dargan recorded eight kills in the victory. Miranda Bass hauled in 37 assists; while Imani Wood collected 16 digs for VSU.
 
For the Lady Blues, Brittney Deveaux led with 18 kills while Tyann Thomas collected 10 digs.
 
The Trojans return to action on October 19 to take on the Elizabeth City State University Vikings. The game begins at 2 p.m. in Elizabeth City, N.C.
 
The VSU Athletic Department continues its "1000 Cans, One Goal: campaign initiative at every home game through Friday. Nov. 21. The purpose of the initiative is to support the local food banks in helping feed the less fortunate during the holiday season. Donors are asked to either bring can goods to any VSU athletic home game (football, basketball, volleyball and/or cross-country) and/or drop your items off to the Athletic Department.
