VSU VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS PANTHERS, 3-1 TUESDAY EVENING

Box Score ETTRICK, Va. – The Virginia State University volleyball team defeated I-95 rival Virginia Union, 3-1 (25-13; 22-25; 25-14; 25-19) Tuesday evening in Daniel Gymnasium.
 
With the victory, the Trojans improve to 11-4 overall and 9-3 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association; while the Panthers fall to 8-10 overall and 7-4 in conference play.
 
VSU opened the match, taking the first set, 25-13 behind heavy hitter sophomore Dierdre Carter. The team ended the first set with 32 attacks and 13 kills.
 
Too many mistakes hindered the Trojans in the second set, as VUU charged back, making it a 1-1 match after outlasting Virginia State, 25-22.  
 
VSU stepped it up in the final two sets, taking the third set with ease, 25-14 and the fourth and final set, 25-19.
 
Carter led the Trojans recording another double-double on the season with 22 kills in 53 total attacks; including two serves aces. She also recorded a team-high 13 digs on the evening. Sophomore Alexsys Pullen added 10 kills and four digs for VSU.
 
Kristin Madison led Virginia Union with a double-double by recording eleven kills and eleven digs; while Esha Atkins added 22 assists and nine digs in the effort.
 
VSU returns to the court when they travel to face Bluefield State College, Friday, Oct. 17 to face in Bluefield, W.V. at 6 p.m. (ET).
 
The VSU Athletic Department continues its' "1000 Cans, One Goal" campaign initiative at every home game through Friday, Nov. 21. The purpose of the initiative is to support the local food banks in helping feed the less fortunate during the holiday season. Donors are asked to either bring can goods to any VSU Athletic home game (football, basketball, volleyball, and/or cross-country) and/or drop your items off to the Athletic Department.
