ETTRICK, Va. – After a perfect 3-0 weekend at the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Round-Up, the Virginia State volleyball team will host the Hawks of Chowan University Thursday evening in Daniel Gymnasium. First serve is slated for 6 p.m.; admission is free to the public.
The Trojans moved to (1-1) in the Northern Division, (5-3) in the CIAA and (7-4) overall after defeating Winston-Salem State, Livingstone and Johnson C. Smith last weekend. . Sophomore Dierdre Carter leads Virginia State with 129 kills on .197 hitting, 18 service aces and two blocks. Sophomore Alexsys Pullen has 80 kills on .172 hitting with 18 digs and eight service aces, while Miranda Bass has dished out a team-high 227 assist to go along with 58 digs. Defensively, Adriana Hazou has a team-best of 161 digs.
Chowan (2-0 Northern Division, 8-1 CIAA, 12-4 Overall) was on a ten-match winning streak before falling to Winston-Salem State, 3-0. The Hawks boast two wins over Livingstone and Johnson C. Smith on day one of the CIAA Round-up last weekend.
The Hawks are led by Melanie Chaussee's 159 kills on .221 hitting. Suraya Chase has 123 kills on .182 hitting with 21 aces and 71 dogs, while Allison Smith has dished out a team-high 532 assists to go along with 88 digs. Defensively, Cindy Enrich has team-best 263 digs.
The VSU Athletic Department continues its' "1000 Cans, One Goal" campaign initiative at every home game through Friday, Nov. 21. The purpose of the initiative is to support the local food banks in helping feed the less fortunate during the holiday season. Donors are asked to either bring can goods to any VSU Athletic home game (football, basketball, volleyball, and/or cross-country) and/or drop your items off to the Athletic Department.
