Raleigh, NC. - After a 10 game winning streak, the Virginia State women's basketball team gets stopped by the Shaw Bears with a 69-64 loss.
In the first half, Jessica Lyons of the Trojans broke the ice with a three pointer with less than two minutes into the game. Shortly after, Diamond Mitchell of the Bears turned the ball over to give the Trojans a chance to make another basket and lead the Bears by five. At this point, the Bears began to play hard defense to gain a ten point lead. The Trojans soon after took advantage of the Bears turnovers and fouls to close the scoring gap by six points. By the close of the first half, the Trojans went into the locker room trailing 33-24.
The second half mimicked the first as the Trojans worked to close the scoring margin. Lyons and Pryncess Tate-Dublin took advantage of the opportunity and secured five three pointers combined while their teammates collected much needed steals and baskets for the Trojans. With a little over five minutes left in the ball game Virginia State was down by two before Shaw pulled away with seconds left on the clock to clinch the win.
Lyons led the Trojans with 16 points and five rebounds while teammate Lamesha Deal and Pryncess Tate-Dublin both collected 12 points. Alexandria Massado led the team with nine rebounds, eight of which were defensive.
The Trojans look to get back on the winning track during "Orange Crush" night as they go up against the Winston-Salem State Rams (9-4 overall). Tipoff begins at 5:30pm in Daniel Gymnasium. Come out and support the "True Orange and Blue."
