ETTRICK, Va. – The No. 14 VSU women's basketball team (16-1, 7-1 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) picked up its 9
th straight home victory on Wednesday night, remaining unbeaten during the 2013-14 season at Daniel Gymnasium with a 94-72 win over the visiting Bulldogs of Bowie State.
Seniors Pryncess Tate-Dublin and Lamesha Deal had tremendous games for the Trojans, scoring 20 and 24 points, respectively. Tate-Dublin's 20 points marked a career high for the Suitland, MD native and Deal collected nine rebounds in addition to her 24 points.
Junior Jessica Lyons also joined the two seniors in double figures, scoring 10 points while also collecting seven assist and two rebounds. Tate-Dublin and Lyons collectively went 6-6 from the free-throw line in the victory.
Virginia State made a season high 21 free throws on 28 attempts (75.0) in the win and won the rebounding battle by seven (37-30).
Bowie State had a difficult time shooting from distance, hitting 6-25 (24.0) of its attempts from behind the arc while shooting 24-65 (36.9) from the field. Five of the Bulldogs were able to get double digits, just not enough to pull the game out.
VSU got off to a very rapid start, with Deal making a jumper and Tate-Dublin right behind her with another jumper before allowing BSU to score. Deal is fouled and goes to the line and makes two and again Tate-Dublin comes behind her and hits another jumper.
Trojans would extend its lead to 18-9 at the first media stoppage (14:48) of the first half. Within four minutes of play after the timeout, the Bulldogs were able to come within two points of the Trojans. The Bulldogs never led in the first half, but pulled within three points on three separate occasions before the Trojans pulled away by 13 points going into half time with a score of 48-35.
Tiffanie Adair went for two lay-ups back to back in the first 83 seconds of the second half putting the Trojans up by 17 points. The Trojans continue to get on the board to led the Bulldogs by as much as 23 points with 16:18 still on the clock.
From this point on, VSU did a great job of keeping the Bulldogs at bay, not allowing them to get any closer than 14 points. Also scoring for the Trojans were Cana Marriott (2-3 FG; 1-1 3PTR; 3-4 FT), Alexandria Massado (4-6 FG; 1-2 FT) and Tiffanie Adair (4-5 FG; 1-3 FT). The Trojans closed the game with a 94-72 win.
VSU will next be in action on Saturday, February 1 at Lincoln University when they face off against the Lions at 2:00pm.
