PETERSBURG, VA. - The No. 15 Virginia State women's basketball team (15-1, 6-1 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) picked up its 8
th straight home victory on Saturday's night remaining unbeaten during the 2013-2014 season at Daniel Gymnasium with an 79-71 overtime win against the visiting Elizabeth City State University.
Junior, Tiffanie Adair led the Trojans with 22 points and 11 rebounds while Senior Lamesha Deal scored 18 points and 10 rebounds, respectively. Adair's 22 points marked a career high for the South Carolina native who fouled out late in overtime. Adair currently leads the CIAA in field goal percentage, shooting at 75 percent. Jessica Lyons also joined Adair and Deal in double figures, scoring 16 points while also dishing out 9 assists. "Adair, Deal and Lyons made a great contribution to the game tonight" stated Coach

Virginia State shot 42.9-percent in the game as the Trojans connected on 27-63 field goals. VSU was solid from the free-throw line shooting 80-percent (20-25). The Trojans combined for 18 second chance points holding the Vikings to only five second chance points. ECSU stayed within 5 points of the VSU before the Trojans went into action with 6:06 minutes remaining in the first half. The Vikings got in gear and tied the game before going into the locker room, 33-33.
As the game got underway in the second half, Jasmine Nixon scored a layup giving the Vikings their first lead in the game. However, the Trojans got back on top leading by as much as five points with 2:43 remaining on the clock. Elizabeth City's DaShera Boone secured a jumper, giving the Vikings what they needed to tie the game 68-68, taking the game into overtime. "We knew it was going to be a tough game but as a team we knew we had to focus on defense" stated Coach Hill.
In overtime, Elizabeth City had hope but the Trojans held the Vikings to only three points. Coach Hill stated "We had a lot of mental breakdowns but overall we did well, the team came back and picked up the momentum with defense which sealed the win for us". The final score 79-71.
The Trojans will host Bowie State University on Wednesday, January 29 at 5:30 pm in Daniel Gymnasium. Come out and support the True Orange and Blue.
