Trojans Prevail over Lady Panthers

The Virginia State University women's basketball team finished their week with a 14-1 overall record after prevailing over Virginia Union on Saturday, January 18.

In the first half, the Trojans had a slow start with only four points on the board five minutes into the game. Pryncess Tate-Dublin got the Trojans momentum up with a three pointer to close the scoring gap to three points. Teammate Cana Marriott followed through two minutes later with a three pointer; bringing the score to 18-14. At the 7:53 minute mark, the Trojans and Lady Panthers battled for the lead. Alexandria Massado, Lamesha Deal, Quiana Kizer and Cana Marriott all made baskets in the last few minutes of the half, but it was not enough to take the lead. The Trojans went to the locker room at half time trailing the Lady Panthers 35-32.

The second half mimicked the first as the Trojans worked to gain the lead. Deal came through with a layup to tie the 48-48 with 10:52 left in the game and another basket to take the lead. Seconds later, Jasmine Dancy of the Panthers tied the game 50-50. The teams fought back and forth with a two point margin separating them every few plays. Marriott kicked the Trojans into high gear with two three point shots to put them ahead. Free throw shots from Deal and Jessica Lyons and a basket from Tiffanie Adair gave the Trojans their victory.

In the game, four Trojans scored in the double digits. Deal finished with 16 point and 11 rebounds while Massado collected 12 points, four rebounds and three assists. Marriott secured 11 points while Lyons was 10 for 10 at the free throw line.

The Trojans will travel to Murfreesboro, NC on Wednesday, January 22 to take on the Chowan Hawks. Tipoff begins at 5:30pm.
