Trojans Defeats Golden Bulls

PETERSBURG, Va. – Virginia State University Trojans matched up against Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls on Monday, January 13 in Daniel Gymnasium to defeat them 67-47.

The game got off to a slow start for the Golden Bulls as the Trojans held them scoreless for the first five minutes of play. Lamesha Deal, Alexandria Massado, and Tiffanie Adair, all starters scored in double digits as well as Pryncess Tate-Dublin who came off the beach. Deal pulled down eight rebounds and got seven assist for the Trojans.

The Trojans had a high percentage of 73.1-percent from the free throw line, with six for six in the first half and 13-20 in the second. The Golden Bulls were 80.0-percent, five for six in the first half and seven for nine in the second half. VSU shot 44.2-percent from the field and 15.4-percent from beyond the arc.

VSU defense was in high performance with steals (11-7) and turnovers (31-17) as they continued to dominate the game going into the locker room leading 29-21.

The Golden Bulls returned from half-time with a new attitude scoring the first six points before the Trojans were able to get on the board. With less than 10 minutes remaining on the clock, the Trojans took charge of the game and never looked back as they lead by a large margin of 25 points with 1:50 left on the clock. As the game came to a close the final score was 67-47 Trojans.

Chelsea Faulhaber of Johnson C. Smith led her team in scoring with 11 points.

The Trojans (13-1 overall; 4-1 conference) will be on the road Saturday, January 18 as they go up against Virginia Union Panthers (4-9 overall; 1-4 conference) at 5:30pm in Richmond, VA.
