PETERSBURG, Va. – The Virginia State women's basketball team cruised to an 63-49 win over Livingstone at the "Faith and Friend and Take A Kid to the Game" on Saturday, January 11 at Daniel Gymnasium in front of a crowd of at minimum 500 spectators.
Senior, Lamesha Deal had a great performance as she was 4-4 from the free throw line and 1-1 three point field goals. Deal also pulled down 15 rebounds at which 11 were defense. Tiffanie Adair a junior reached double digits in rebounds and secured eight points while junior, Jessica Lyons put 13 points on the board and got 5 assist.
VSU shot 32.3-percent from the field and 33.3-percent from beyond the arc. The Trojans shot 65.4-percent from the line as they made 17 free throws on 26 attempts.
Livingstone was limited to just 25.9-percent shooting in the game and was 2-for-8 from three-point range and the Blue Bears shot 25.0-percent from the beyond the arc. The Blue Bears connected on 17-of-21 free throws for a free throw shooting percentage of 81.0- percent.
The Trojans' defense continues to be solid as it held the Blue Bears to connect on 15 field goals and two three-pointer. The remainder of their scores were from free throws.
VSU dominated Livingstone on assists (12-7) and steals (6-3). The Trojans beached outscored the Blue Bears 25 points to 7. With 17 turnovers by Livingstone the Trojans were not able to capitalize on them.
Pryncess Tate-Dublin got the Trojans on the board with a free-throw to open the game and VSU never relinquished the lead. Virginia State shot 25.0-percent from the floor in the first half as the Trojans connected on nine of 36 field goals. The Trojans' offense drained one three pointer on three attempts to shoot 33.3-percent in the frame, while notching six free throws on nine attempts for a shooting percentage of 66.7-percent. The Trojans went into the locker room at halftime 25-19.
Following the halftime break, the Trojans continued their scoring surge as they extended the lead by 15 points with 4:43 remaining on the clock. Virginia State shot 41.4-percent from the field in the second half, while the Blue Bears shot 35.7-percent. Despite the Blue Bears' effort, the Trojans took the contest with a final score of 63-49.
Livingstone was led offensively by Cierra York with 18 points and defensively by Taylor Daniels with 13 rebounds.
The Trojans will be back on the court Monday, January 13 against the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith at 5:30pm Daniel Gymnasium.
