Trojans Baseball Swept by Kutztown in Double Header

Virginia State scored only one run in both games of a double header with Kutztown on Saturday, March 9th in Petersburg, VA. Colton Gunn pitched for the Trojans in game one in a 9-1 defeat while David Fitzgerald threw in game two in an 8-1 lost.

The Trojans surrendered nine hits and two fielding errors to Kutztown in a 9-1 lost in game one of a double header. Nicholas Christopher, John McCarty, and Rodell Stewart all recorded hits while Percy Evans had the Trojans only RBI on a fielder's choice in the sixth inning.

VSU's Colton Gunn (3-2) struck out two batters and also walked two but had a rough outing with six hits and seven earned runs. Lovell Estep was inserted into the lineup in the fifth inning and had one strikeout with two earned runs.

David Fitzgerald took the mound for Virginia State in game two against Kutztown.  He went three innings allowing eight hits and six earned runs while striking out four batters. Maso Cotton pitched two innings gave up two hits and struck out two batters before Brandon Cooper finished the evening striking out two batters. Virginia State allowed nine hits and eight runs in game two. Defensively, the Trojans had two fielding errors in an 8-1 lost in game two to Kutztown.

Nicholas Christopher led off the first inning with a double to left field. Joshua Markins followed with a single to first base advancing Christopher to third base. On the next play, both Joshua Markins and Nicholas Christopher stole a base with Christopher stealing home scoring the Trojans first run of the game. Kutztown scored two runs in the first inning, five in the third inning, and one in the fourth inning.

William Tapp led Virginia State with two hits while James Goodwin, Stephen brown, Joshua Markins, Kelvin Davis, and Nicholas Christopher all had one hit. Virginia State only scored in the first inning suffering a tough defeat in the second game of a double header against Kutztown. Virginia State falls to 7-7 overall and 4-6 at home.
