VSU head baseball coach
Merrill Morgan won his 200
th career game as the Trojans defeated Salem International 1-0 in the first game of a triple-header in Petersburg, VA on Sunday.
Colton Gunn (2-1) took the mound for the Trojans in game one against the Tigers of Salem international and struck out six batters. He was perfect through six innings until the top of the seventh when he surrendered his only base hit of the game.
In the second inning, outfielder
Corey Grant hit an RBI single to left field scoring
William Tapp. The Trojans held on for a 1-0 victory behind great pitching from
Colton Gunn.
Percy Evans recorded ten putouts at first base, while
Demetrius Roach had six behind the plate at catcher. Offensively,
Percy Evans had two hits to lead the Trojans.
In game 2,
Nicholas Christopher (1-1) carried the Trojans with his bat and also from the mound in another battle with the Tigers. Christopher pitched the entire game for VSU striking out eight batters, allowing only five hits, but two crucial runs in the second inning.
Two runs were scored on an RBI single and a costly error by the VSU infield. Salem international led 2-0 early in the second game of a triple header.
Nicholas Christopher continued to power the Trojans. In the third inning, he hit his first home run over the left-centerfield cutting the Tigers lead. He finished with three hits while
Tyler Coleman had two hits. VSU failed to bring the game any closer, falling to the Tigers 2-1.
Finally in game 3,
Nicholas Christopher continued to power the Trojans at the plate. He broke out for four hits and two doubles, but the Trojans dropped their second game in a row 7-6.
Salem international scored seven runs in the first inning jumping ahead of the Trojans on poor pitching and sloppy fielding. Pitcher
David Fitzgerald was inserted into the VSU lineup hoping to stop the bleeding from the Tigers in the first inning.
David Fitzgerald got the Trojans through the inning as VSU trailed 7-0.
Joshua Markins hit an RBI double to center field in the bottom of the first for the Trojans scoring

Percy Evans reached on a fielder's choice but
Nicholas Christopher scored on the play, cutting the Tigers lead to 7-2. Fitzgerald kept off the Salem International offense as the Trojans continued to rally back.
The Trojans made the game interesting scoring three runs in the fourth inning. Sparking a VSU run infielder
Nicholas Christopher doubled through the left side, scoring both
Rodell Stewart and
Colton Gunn.
Demetrius Roach scored on a groundout RBI by
Joshua Markins also in the fourth inning. VSU now trailed by two runs 7-5 to Salem International.
David Fitzgerald did a great job of keeping off the Tigers batters as he finished with six strikeouts. In an attempt to cut the lead even more,
Nicholas Christopher doubled to right field in the sixth inning scoring
Joshua Markins. That would the final run for the Trojans in a tough battle with the Tigers. Salem International held on for a 7-6 win over the Trojans.
