Lamesha Deal had a game-high 15 points for the Trojans, but Elizabeth City State held onto a double-digit first half lead defeating VSU 67-51 in Elizabeth City, NC on Saturday, January 26
th.
Virginia State University women's basketball team got off to a slow start allowing Elizabeth City State to build a double digit lead (16-6) at the 13:21 mark in the opening half. The Trojans were simply out scored and out rebounded in the first half of play against the Lady Vikings. The Trojans shot a lackluster 29% from the field and were out rebounded 24-13. Elizabeth City State outscored Virginia State also in the paint 30-12.
Da'Shea Jones led the Trojans in scoring at the end of one half. Jones scored five points on 2-7 shots from the field including one made three-pointer.
Lamesha Deal and Yashica Blackney scored four points apiece in the first quarter. This was
Lamesha Deal's second game back in rotation after recovering from an ankle injury suffered last week. Elizabeth City State had a 40-20 lead after the first 20 minutes of play on their annual Winter Homecoming on the campus of Elizabeth City State University.
The Trojans managed to cut the Lady Viking's lead during the second half of play. The Trojans rallied behind Lemesha Deal. Deal managed to cut the lead to single digits twice but to no avail. The Trojan's just couldn't produce enough offense to overtake the Lady Vikings. The Trojans play improved in the second half however they couldn't recover from their first half mistakes losing 67-53 to CIAA Northern Divisional rival Lady Vikings.
Lamesha Deal poured in 11 of her 15 points in the second half attempting to spark a VSU comeback. Deal led all scorers with 15 points and was two rebounds away from a double-double (8).
Da'Shae Jones ended up with 10 points on the evening while Yashica Blankey added 12 points.
The Trojans move to 9-10 overall, 2-7 in CIAA conference play and travels to Bowie, MD to tangle with the Lady Bulldogs on Wednesday, January 30
th at 5:30 p.m.
