Three Trojans Hit Double-Figures in Win Over Chowan

Three Trojan's netted double-figures as VSU defeated Chowan University 60-51 on Wednesday, January 23th in Daniel Gymnasium. With this win your Trojans hop up to a 2-6 conference record and a 9-9 record overall.

The Trojans struggled early in the first half shooting a horrific 29% from the field. VSU's Da'Shae Jones scored 9 of her 19 points in the first half of play. Jones knocked down some key baskets down the stretch to keep the Trojans within striking distance of Chowan. VSU managed to cut the Hawks lead to seven points (28-21) before halftime. The Trojans were out rebounded 24-11, another big reason the Hawks were able to maintain a first half advantage.

However the second half was a completely different story. Lamesha Deal started the first half with a bang! Deal scored a quick basket sparking a Trojan rally. Alexandria Massado drew a foul and knocked down a pair from the stripe on the following possession to cut the Hawks lead to three points (28-25). Jasmine Stewart converted on a three point play to tie it at 28-28 after she was fouled in transition. Stewart was one of three Trojans to net double figures she ended up with 13 points. Then Yashica Blakney hit back to back threes to spring the Trojans ahead for good. Blakney scored eight of her ten points in the second half. The Trojans maintained a consistent lead throughout the second thanks to some smothering full-court defense.

Virginia State held Chowan to 28% shooting in the second half of play as VSU topped Chowan University 60-51. VSU forced Chowan to turn the ball over a total of 27 times at the end of regulation.  The Trojans improved their field goal percentage dramatically. They made 54%  of their shoots in the second. VSU hits the road to face off with Elizabeth City State on Saturday, January 26th. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00pm.
