Virginia State University's baseball team eliminated the Falcons of Saint Augustine's College with an 8-2 win on Thursday, April 19th at the 2012 CIAA Baseball Championships.
RHP Nicholas Christopher (freshman/ Dinwiddie, VA) paced the Trojans with three strikeouts and only two earned runs in his eighth victory of the season. Christopher pitched eight innings allowing seven hits. He also led the Trojans at the plate with three hits.
VSU scored one run in the first inning on an infield groundout RBI by Tyler Coleman (freshman/ Chesterfield, VA) to score outfielder Howard Spencer (senior/ Richmond, VA). The Trojans added another two runs in the next inning on three hits. William Tapp (freshman/ Dinwiddie, VA), Kelvin Davis (freshman/ South Boston, VA), and Nicholas Christopher all had hits in that inning.
The Trojans Tyler Coleman finished the game with two RBI's and Kelvin Davis and Michael Whiten (senior/ Baton Rouge LA) both added RBI's of their own.
Virginia State fell in the opening game of the 2012 CIAA Baseball Championships, 8-0 against Chowan. RHP Maso Cotton went four innings surrendering five unearned runs. RHP William Tapp relieved Cotton in the sixth inning and RHP Vernon Vaughan (freshman/ Chester, VA) finished the game.
Both Howard Spencer and Tyler Coleman each recorded doubles in the lost to Chowan. Coleman led the Trojans with two hits.
The Trojans will face the loser of tomorrow's Chowan/Winston-Salem State game at 2:00 p.m. at Whaley Colbert Field on the campus of Virginia State University.
