Three Trojan Seniors Leads VSU in Win Over Bears

Virginia State University's baseball closed out their regular season with a 9-2 win over the Bears from Shaw University on Sunday, April 15 in Petersburg, VA. Three seniors played their final regular season game at Whaley Colbert Field; infielder Michael Whiten plus outfielders Cameron Cox and Howard Spencer.

Infielder Michael Whiten (senior/ Baton Rouge, LA) had a season-high three hits in his final regular season game as a Trojan. Outfielder Howard Spencer (senior/ Richmond, VA) added two hits and stole two bases.

VSU broke out for three runs on three hits in the third inning. Percy Evans (junior/ Cary, NC), John McCarty(junior/ Colonial Heights, VA) and Tyler Coleman (freshman/ Chesterfield, VA) all scored runs.

LHP Nicholas Persad (freshman/ Central Islip, NY) struck out nine batters and allowed two runs against the Bears. Persad won his fourth consecutive game in a row for the Trojans.

The Trojans (23-16, 12-6) will host the second seed Hawks of Chowan University on Thursday, April 15 at Whaley Colbert Field in the opening game of the 2012 CIAA Baseball Championships.
