The Lady Trojans bench contributed 39 points in a Virginia State 64-51 win over Elizabeth City State on Monday, Feb. 13 in Ettrick, VA. Da'shae Jones (freshman/ Norfolk, VA) led Virginia State with 16 points, 6 assists, and 5 rebounds while Quiana Kizer (junior/ Alexandria, VA) followed with 13 points.
Virginia State shot 43% from the field in the first half, behind 21 points from the Lady Trojans bench. The Lady Trojans defense scored 15 points of 12 Lady Vikings' turnovers. VSU's Marquilla Evans (senior/Portsmouth, VA) drained a trey at the 11:28 mark in the first half knotting the contest at (15-15). Evans sparked a 21-7 Lady Trojans run to the end the half. The Lady Trojans led the Lady Vikings 37-22 at the half.
The Lady Vikings cut the Lady Trojans lead to within six points (52-46) with 4:56 left in regulation. But with a deep bench, the Lady Trojans was just too much for the Lady Vikings to handle. Guard Da'Shae Jones continued to assert herself on the offensive end of the floor scoring 9 or her 16 points in the second half. The Lady Trojans went on to defeat their northern divisional rival 64-51, in Daniel Gymnasium.
VSU's Ashley Whitaker (junior/Petersburg, VA) shot a blazing 60% from the field with 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals. Leading the way off the bench was guard Da'Shae Jones scoring a game-high 16 points along with 4 steals, 6 dimes, and 5 rebounds. Also igniting the Lady Trojans off the bench forward Quiana Kizer with 13 points and 4 tough boards.
The Lady Trojans will hit the road to play the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University February 18 at 1:00 p.m.
