Smith Leads VSU Bench Scoring in Tough 53-52 Loss to Virginia-Lynchburg

Box Score The Trojans bench poured in 31 points led by Asyja Smith's (Jr./ Bowie, MD) 11 points, but Virginia State University's women's basketball team fell to the Lady Dragons of Virginia University of Lynchburg in a close 53-52 loss on Sunday, December 2nd in Lynchburg, VA.

After leading Virginia-Lynchburg 31-28 at the half, the Trojans fell into a slump shooting 27% from the field in the second half and were outscored 25-21. The Trojans and the Lady Dragons were both tied at 40 each with 13 minutes left to play. VSU's Brianna Holt (Sr./ Selmer, TN) hit back-to-back three's springing the Trojans to a 46-45 lead at the 9:46 mark, but then Virginia-Lynchburg went on a run of their own. The Lady Dragons answered back and went on a 6-0 run of their own (53-46) with 3:24 left in the game.

VSU was unable to score another field goal but managed to nail six important free-throws. After Asyja Smith knocked down two shots from the charity stripe VSU trailed the Lady Dragons and pulled within a point (53-52) with 43 seconds. The Trojans forced a turnover with 17 seconds, called a timeout and had time for once last play. With six seconds remaining the Trojans were unable to score and fell to the Lady Dragons 53-52.

Two Trojans scored in double-figures coming off of the bench. Asyja Smith scored a game-high 11 points and Brianna Holt had 10 points. Both Smith and Holt hit two shots from long range as the VSU outscored VUL's bench 31-18. Lamesha Deal (Jr./ Norfolk, VA) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds with three blocked shots.

The Trojans fall to 4-3 early in the season after a close loss to the Lady Dragons. VSU travels to Takoma, MD on December 9th in their next game against Washington Adventist at 2:00 p.m.
