Trojans Fall 19-14 to Panthers in Season FInale

VSU's Virginior Loiseau (Jr./ Fort Meyers, FL) returned an interception for 37-yards in the third quarter, but the Trojans were unable to capitalize and fell to Virginia Union 19-14 in the final game of the 2012 season.

The Trojans offense allowed a safety and trailed the Panthers 2-0 at the 11:03 mark in the first quarter. VSU quarterback, Jarred Battle (Sr./Norfolk, VA) threw for 41-yards early in the game, including a 19-yard completion to wide receiver Ja'von Smallwood (Fr./ Virginia Beach, VA). VSU collected 62 total yards in the opening quarter to VUU's 71 total yards. Defensive back Virginior Loiseau (Jr./ Fort Meyers, FL) led the Trojans' defense with four solo tackles early.

VUU connected on a 29-yard field goal attempt at the 12:00 extending their lead to 5-0 over the Trojans. VSU's offense dominated VUU in the second quarter with a mixture of rushing and passes. Quarterback Jarred Battle had four rushes for 47-yards in the second quarter alone. Running back Lamont Britt (R-Fr./ Norfolk, VA) also had four rushes in the second quarter for 29-yards as the offense totaled 77 yards rushing. The Panthers Kenneth Graham threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Mantez Holmes with 49 seconds left in the half giving VUU a 12-0 lead. The Trojans' Ja'von Smallwood caught four more passes in the second quarter for 52-yards and finally put the Trojans on the board with a 2-yard touchdown reception at the ending of the second quarter. VSU trailed 12-7 at the half.

Defensively, Thomas Sykes (Sr./ Newport News, VA) recorded five tackles in the first half, while Virginior Loiseau had four tackles. Offensively, Jarred Battle completed 11 of 19 pass attempts for 125 total yards. Battle also rushed for 56-yards and Britt followed collecting 44-yards yards on the ground.

The Panthers controlled the third quarter with 12 minutes of offensive possession. VUU had 126 total yards in the third quarter with the bulk of the yardage coming on rushing attempts. VSU only had seven offensive plays for 14 total yards, led by Lamont Britt 16-yards rushing. Defensive back Virginior Louiseau intercepted the Panther quarterback and returned it for 37-yards, but the offense was unable to capitalize. Neither team scored any points in the third period. The Trojans trailed 12-7 heading into the final quarter.

Trailing the Panthers heading into the final quarter, the Trojans defense allowed another touchdown at the 11:55 mark in the fourth quarter. VUU's Richard Rodwell scored on a 4-yard rush giving VUU a 19-7 lead. VSU's Tyler Wilson found the end zone at the 8:39 mark in the fourth quarter on a 2-yard rush. The Panther lead was cut to five points after Wilson's score and the Trojans were back in the game. Quarterback Jarred Battle completed 7 of 11 pass attempts for 69 yards in the fourth quarter but was unable to lead the Trojans into the end zone. Both wide receivers for VSU, Corey Young (Sr./ Virginia Beach, VA) and Gene Holloman (So./ Virginia Beach, VA) caught two passes each from Battle. The Panthers' defense held onto a 19-14 lead and defeated the Trojans in the final game of the 2012 season.

Offensively, Battle completed 18 of 33 pass attempts for 194-yards, Smallwood caught seven passes for 86-yards and a touchdown, while Britt led the rushing attack with 64-yards. Defensively, Brandon Robinson (So./ Mechanicsville, VA) led with 11 tackles (7 solo, 4 assisted) and Ronald Lewis (R-So./ Virginia Beach, VA) added 10 tackles (6 solo, 4 assisted).
