Deal’s 17 Points & 18 Rebounds Powers Trojans Against Washington Adventist, 62-50

Virginia State University's women's basketball team hosted Washington Adventist on the final day of the Chick-Fil- A Classic in Daniel Gymnasium on Saturday, November 24th.

Virginia State led for almost the entire first half despite a rough night offensively.  VSU shot 35.3% from the field and went 0-8 from behind the three point line. VSU's Ashley Whitaker (Sr./ Petersburg, VA) came off of the bench and provided a veteran spark with several great defensive plays and Briana Holt (Sr./ Selmar, TN) led all scorers with eight points in the first half. 

VSU played outstanding defense in the first half forcing 11 Washington Adventist turnovers.  Despite hitting five three-pointers in the first half, Washington Adventist was held to 7-26 (26.9%) shooting from the field.  The Trojans managed to go into halftime with a 28-27 advantage.

Virginia State turned up the intensity in the second half with full court defensive pressure. Washington Adventist had a difficult time breaking the press and Virginia State gradually began to pull away turning great defense into instant offense. Washington Adventist was held to 15-54 (27.8 %) shooting for the game and they turned the ball over 22 times. 

Lamesha Deal (Jr./ Norfolk, VA) led all scorers with 18 points.  Deal also dominated the boards grabbing 17 rebounds.  Jasmine Stewart (Sr./ Washington, DC) had an outstanding game defensively with a game high five steals to go along with a solid 14 points.

The Trojans were able to pull out the tough win over Washington Adventist University.  Final score VSU 62, Washington Adventist 50. Virginia State improves their overall record to 4-2 with their second straight win.
