Defense Leads Lady Trojans to Victory Over Elizabeth City State, 3-0

Virginia State University's volleyball team swept Elizabeth City State University 3-0 (25-10, 25-21, 25-20) on Thursday, October 11th inside Daniel Gymnasium. The Lady Trojans played great defensively snagging 60 total digs, led by Jenessa Shinauld's (So./ Sacramento, CA) 22 digs and Whitley Bradley (R-So./ Cibilo, TX) added 11 digs.

The Lady Trojans jump ahead of the Lady Vikings in the CIAA Northern Divisional standings now ranked second with a 4-1 divisional record. In the opening set, VSU cruised to an easy 25-10 victory as the Lady Vikings recorded seven errors. The Lady Trojans were flawless in the first set with no errors but had two kills apiece coming from three Lady Trojans; Whitley Bradley, Aubree Parker (Jr./ Fort Pierce, FL), and Brianna Small (So./ Toms River, NJ).

VSU's Whitley Bradley collected four kills in the second set leading the Lady Trojans to a 25-21 win. ECSU committed 11 errors in the second set compared to four errors by VSU. Defensively, Jenessa Shinauld played a key role for the Lady Trojans with 11 digs in the second set and Jasmine Davis (Sr./ Oakton, VA) added two solo blocks. Brianna Small recorded a solo block and Bradley had seven digs to go along with her kills.

With a commanding 2-0 lead in the match, the Lady Trojans continued to dominate the Lady Vikings in the third set. Aubree Parker garnered four kills with two service aces to lead the Lady Trojans in the final set. VSU competed as a team and came out victorious with a 25-20 win and recorded their third consecutive straight-set sweep over their opponent.

Both Whitley Bradley and Aubree Parker had eight kills each, while Brianna Small and Nikkisha Walker (Sr./ St. Louis, MO) each had four kills. Jasmine Henderson (Jr./ St. Louis, MO) had a solid outing with a game-high 22 assists out of the 27 total kills by the Lady Trojans. With four solo blocks and four service aces, Jasmine Davis was also a huge factor in the VSU win over the Lady Vikings. Head volleyball coach, Ivana Rich has matched last season's win total with eight regular season games remaining.

The Lady Trojans improve to 10-8 overall, 9-2 in the CIAA conference with a 4-1 CIAA Northern Divisional record. VSU will travel to Bowie, MD to go against the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University on October 22nd at 6:00 p.m.
