The Lady Trojans were outscored 40-23 in the second half by the Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) in a 62-52 loss on the road on Saturday, Jan. 28 in Elizabeth City, NC.
Marquilla Evans (senior/ Portsmouth, VA) paced the Lady Trojans with 14 points while
Quiana Kizer (junior/ Alexandria, VA) grabbed a team-high 6 rebounds.
Virginia State dictated the game's tempo of play the entire first half against Elizabeth City State on the Lady Vikings' Winter Homecoming. The Lady Trojans jumped out to an early 9-0 lead to start the game behind
Brianna Holt's (junior/ Selmer, TN) quick 7 points. Virginia State's lead grew to double-digits with two made free-throws by
Marquilla Evans at the 14:01 mark in the first half. ECSU answered back with a trey by Jasmine Walker cutting the VSU lead to seven (12-5), but
Da'Shae Jones (freshman/ Norfolk, VA) responded with a three-pointer to put the Lady Trojans back up by ten (15-5). The Lady Trojans continued to strive on offense in the first half shooting 44% from the field with 3 treys made from downtown. The Lady Vikings struggled in the opening half shooting 32% and gave up 9 points off of their own turnovers. Virginia State led at the half 29-22.
The second half was a different game for the Lady Trojans as their halftime lead disappeared against the Lady Vikings. ECSU went on a 21-3 run in the second half to go ahead and break-out to a 16 point lead (59-43) with 2:48 left to play in the game. Virginia State turned the ball over 14 times in the second half and only made it to the charity stripe three times. The Lady Vikings controlled the glass with 19 total rebounds in the second half and shot 50% from the field.
Marquilla Evans led the Lady Trojans with 14 points, shooting 5 of 10 from the floor nailing two from long range.
Brianna Holt and
Mariame Sylla (senior, Ivory Coast, West Africa) scored 9 and 8 points respectively. Virginia State falls to 1-6 in the CIAA conference having lost six of their last seven games in league play.
Virginia State will host Bowie State on Monday, Jan. 30 in Daniel Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m. looking to end their current streak.
