Lady Trojans Cruise Past Washington Adventist, 84-55

Three Lady Trojans scored in double-figures in a 84-55 win for Virginia State over Washington Adventist on Sunday, December 11 inside Daniel Gymnasium. Virginia State (5-4) scored a season-high 84 points and hit the paint grabbing 52 rebounds (26 offensive, 26 defensive) in their best performance of the season defeating the Lady Shock at home.

Virginia State trailed Washington Adventist by 6 points early in the game. The Lady Shocks led 11-5 with 13:38 in the first half before Virginia State began their run. Defensive pressure and scoring from off of the bench sparked a Lady Trojan rally.

VSU's junior guard Ashley Whitaker tied the game at 15-15 by knocking down a jumper then Marquilla Evans hit 3 consecutive three-pointers in a row putting the Lady Trojans ahead by 8 points with 3:04 left in the first half. The Lady Trojans scored 23 bench points in the first half as they led the Lady Shocks 34-19 at the half.

The run continued in the second half as Virginia State shot 47 percent and led by as much as 33 points. Full court pressure and 22 more points from the bench led to a Virginia State victory.

Senior guard Marquilla Evans led all scoring with 15 points. She went 3 for 5 from long range coming off of the Lady Trojan bench. Sophomore forward LaMesha Deal and junior Quiana Kizer both scored 11 points each for VSU.

The Lady Trojans scored easily against the Lady Shock, shooting 41% from the field and scoring 29 second chance points. Deal grabbed a team-high 8 rebounds as the Lady Trojans out-rebounded Washington Adventist 52-30. Kizer had 6 total rebounds, 5 of those were offensive boards and junior forward Kiara Walton followed with 7 rebounds and scored 7 points.

The VSU women's basketball team will return to the road for their next action on Dec. 16 against Cheyney University at 5 pm.
