Lady Trojans Fall To Shippensburg, 55-48

The Lady Trojans were held to 30 percent shooting from the field in a 55-48 loss to Shippensburg University on Tuesday, Nov. 29th in Shippensburg, PA. Junior guard Jasmine Stewart led Virginia State with 12 points.

Virginia State could not take the lead in a tightly matched, defensive game with Shippensburg. The Lady Trojans shot 30 percent from the field, made only one three-pointer, and turned the ball over 23 times. Shippensburg made 20 of 27 free-throws compared to Virginia State's 11 of 13 free-throw attempts.

The Lady Trojans had their biggest lead of three points with 15:08 remaining in the game. Shippensburg tied the game up by nailing a three-pointer on the next possession. The momentum stayed with Shippensburg and the Lady Trojans found themselves down by 11 points with 3:58 left in the game.

Shippensburg was able to hold off the Lady Trojans and win by seven points. VSU did out rebound Shippensburg 49-34 including 20 offensive rebounds. Virginia State also had 15 second chance points and 13 points off turnovers.

Jasmine Stewart scored 12 points, shooting 4 of 10 and knocking down all four free-throw attempts for Virginia State. Senior center Mariame Sylla followed with 9 points and a team-high 12 rebounds.

Shippensburg's Monae Baker recorded a double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds to led her team.

With a 4-4 overall record, the Lady Trojans will host Washington Adventist University on Dec.11 at 2:00 pm in Ettrick, VA.
