WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Virginia State University men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to the University of the District of Columbia on Wednesday evening at UDC Turf Field.
UDC struck early, taking a 1-0 lead just 1:24 into the match on a goal from David Serra. The Firebirds added another goal in the 23rd minute when Marius Elmose found the back of the net, sending UDC into halftime with a 2-0 advantage.
The Trojans came out of the halftime break looking to cut into the deficit and created several opportunities throughout the second half. Virginia State recorded seven shots after halftime and earned six corner kicks in the match.
UDC extended its lead in the 55th minute when Christopher Ruiz converted a penalty kick to make it 3-0.
Virginia State continued to pressure the Firebirds late in the match. Andrew Brooks Jr. came close to putting the Trojans on the board, hitting the post in the 72nd minute. Sebastine Daniel also had a strong opportunity in the 60th minute, but his attempt struck the crossbar.
Daniel led the Trojans with five shots, including two shots on goal, while Iverson Garcia Montilla recorded two shots with one on target. Brooks Jr. added two shots.
Virginia State finished the match with 11 shots and six corner kicks, while UDC recorded 14 shots and three corners. Goalkeepers Jacob Taylor and Sean Roach combined for two saves for the Trojans.
