Trojans drop low scoring double header

Elizabeth City, N.C. (Apr. 8, 2026)- The Virginia State baseball team continued New South Atlantic Conference play with a double header at Mid-Atlantic Christian on Wednesday afternoon. They dropped game one 2-1 and then game two 1-0 in nine innings 

GAME 1 VSU 1 MACU 2 

  • Both teams went down in order in the first inning. In the third inning Norman Jackson secured the first hit of the game 

  • Samuel Young hit a home run to left center field to get the first run on the board 

  • Preston Branzelle was caring a no-hitter into the sixth inning before the Mustangs hit a single up the middle 

  • In the bottom of the seventh MACU got on via an error, then singled the walked off the Trojans with a double to the gap 

  • Branzelle went all seven innings giving up 2 runs, neither earned, striking out 10 Mustang batters 

GAME 2 VSU 0 MACU 1 

  • The Trojans weren't able to get a runner in scoring position until the fifth inning when Jaron Ward singled then stole second with two outs 

  • Jackson was then able to get to third after opening the inning with a walk. A sac bunt then a groundout gave either team a runner 90 feet from home plate 

  • Gavin Stevens started on the mound in game two and was able to hold MACU to five hits through seven innings with only three real scoring opportunities 

  • In the eighth inning Ralph Rivera started with a walk. Nyle Shewmake pinch ran for him then advanced to second on a sac bunt. Antonio Boone then reached on a two out error to get runners on the corners. Shewmake was then thrown out at home to end the top half of the inning 

  • In the bottom of the ninth, MACU used two errors with one out to get runners on the corners. A single by the next batter brought home the winning run 

With the losses VSU moves to 8-16 overall and 0-6 in conference. The Trojans are back in action Tuesday April 14 against Barton starting at 3:00 pm.
