Ettrick, Va. (Mar. 14, 2026)- The Virginia State baseball team split a doubleheader against Bluefield State. In game one
Hector Rivera hit a walkoff single to secure a 5-4 win while in game two a pitchers duel unfolded with VSU dropping the game 1-0.
Game 1
- Neither team was able to score in the first two innings
- In the top of the third the Big Blue put up two runs. In the bottom half of the inning Jaron Ward hit a one out double then Johnathan Smith took his place with a double of his own. Norman Jackson was then hit by the pitch. Antonio Boone then brought in both runs with a single
- BSU answered in the fourth with two runs of their own and keep the Trojans off the basepaths
- To start the bottom of the seventh Smith singled to center followed by a Jackson walk. Boone then got on via an error on the first baseman which allowed Smith to score. Jaquan Tucker grounded out but allowed Boone to move up 90 feet. Luka Gilliam was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out. Rivera then hit a two out single just inside the third base bag to hand the Trojans the win
- Preston Branzelle picked up the win pitching all seven innings gathering three strikeouts
Game 2
- The Big Blue were able to get two walks in teh first but neither team was able to captalize
- In the third back-to-back doubles allowed Bluefield State to put up the only run of the game
- Smith was able to break up the perfect game bid in the bottom of the fourth with a single up the middle
- Gavin Stevens despite picking up the loss struck out six Big Blue hitters in seven innings
With the split VSU is now 5-4 on the season.
