Ettrick, Va. (Feb. 14, 2026)The Virginia State University baseball team dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader to Wheeling University at home, falling 3-0 in the opener before a 4-0 setback in game two.
Game One – Wheeling 3, Virginia State 0
Virginia State was limited to two hits in the first game as Wheeling used a strong sixth inning to secure the win.
Norman Jackson and Samuel Young each recorded a hit to pace the Trojans offensively. The Trojans threatened in the fifth inning when Young singled and Hector Rivera reached on an error, but Wheeling worked out of the jam to keep VSU off the scoreboard.
On the mound, Prestron Branzelle (0-1) started and allowed one run over five innings while striking out four. Charles Jones pitched the final two innings. Wheeling broke the game open in the sixth with two runs to extend its lead to 3-0.
Virginia State pitchers combined for nine strikeouts in the contest, but the Trojans were unable to generate timely offense, striking out nine times as a team.
Game Two – Wheeling 4, Virginia State 0
In game two, Wheeling struck early with a solo home run in the top of the first inning and added insurance runs in the fourth and fifth frames.
Jackson accounted for the Trojans' lone hit of the game, finishing 1-for-2 at the plate. Virginia State drew two walks but was limited offensively throughout the afternoon.
Gavin Stevens (0-1) took the loss after tossing 4.1 innings, allowing four runs (two earned) while striking out three. Nora III provided 2.2 innings of scoreless relief to close out the contest.
Wheeling capitalized on defensive miscues in the fifth inning to plate two unearned runs and push the advantage to 4-0.
