PETERSBURG, VA --The Virginia State women's basketball team scored 38 points off of turnovers on the way to a 74-53 victory over the Emory & Henry Wasps at home Saturday.

The Trojans (8-3) had four players score in double figures, led by Maya Ellis, who had 18 points, nine rebounds and five steals. Kendahl Spearman tacked on 14 points from the bench and Tamia Darden chipped in as well with 10 points and two steals.

Led by Michaela Lane's six offensive rebounds, Virginia State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 17 boards that resulted in 15 second chance points.

The Virginia State defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday's game, forcing 29 Emory & Henry turnovers while committing 18. Those takeaways turned into 38 points on the other end of the floor. Ellis' five steals led the way individually for the Trojans.

How It Happened

After falling behind 11-2, Virginia State went on a 7-0 run with 5:45 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Spearman, to narrow its deficit to 11-9. The Trojans deficit remained the same as they entered the second quarter trailing 21-19.

The Trojans continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 37-33 halftime deficit.

Virginia State came out of halftime on fire, going on a 27-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Darden, to grab a 60-37 lead with 23 seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Virginia State played well near the basket, scoring 18 of its 27 points in the paint.

Virginia State kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Ellis' three, to grow the lead to 74-47 with 2:45 to go in the contest. The Wasps narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Trojans still cruised the rest of the way for the 74-53 win.
