Trojans win both games to advance to NSAC Semifinals

Wilson, N.C. (May 2, 2025)- The Virginia State University baseball team went undefeated in the loser's bracket to make it to Saturday in the NSAC tournament. In game one VSU knocked off Lighthouse Christian College 7-5 and then in the night cap upset the two seed Mid Atlantic Christian 6-0. 

GAME 1 VSU 7 LCC 5 

  • The Makos scored two in the opening frame and added one more run in the fourth 

  • The Trojans would only muster one hit in the first four innings, but in the fifth would explode scoring four runs 

  • TJ McGowan then kept LCC off the board in the top of the sixth. In the bottom half of the inning Matthew May hit a one out single. Smith then singled and advanced to second which scored May. Ealey hit another single to score Smith, then stole second. Guthrie then brought home Ealey after a single 

  • Lighthouse Christian managed to score two runs in the seventh to put pressure on the Trojans, but McGowan managed to complete the full game to earn his first win of the season 

  • Four different Trojans had multi-hit games and two had at least two RBI's 

  • With the win VSU continued in the loser's bracket playing the two seed Mid-Atlantic Christian University at 6:30 p.m. 

GAME 2 VSU 6 MACU 0 

  • Neither team scored in the first inning, but the Trojans did get a runner in scoring position after Guthrie and McGowan hit back-to-back singles 

  • In the top of the second Johnson singled then advanced to second. Rivera then doubled to bring in the first run of the game 

  • In the fourth inning Johnson got on via an error by the shortstop, then Norman Jackson got on via an error by the second baseman. Rivera then singled to score Johnson. In the fifth Ealey singled, Guthrie singled and McGowan hit a sac bunt to advance both runners. Tucker then walked to load the bases. Johnson then hit a sac fly, Jackson doubled, and Rivera singled to score four runs 

  • Up until the seventh inning Charles Jones pitched a one-hit shutout striking out two batters and only allowing one walk. In the bottom of the seventh the Mustangs managed to score a run, but Jones struck out the last batter to pitch a complete game 

  • Jones picked up his second win of the season 

  • VSU will continue playing in the loser's bracket playing the three seed Newport News Apprentice Builders School on Saturday May 3 at 10:30 a.m. 

With the two wins the Trojans improved to 16-24 overall.
