Mount Olive, N.C. (Feb. 12, 2025)- Playing in their second game the Virginia State University men's lacrosse team dropped their first ever matchup against University of Mount Olive Trojans 12-6.
The game started out with Mount Olive firing off seven straight shots with Jace Wiggins saving three of them. VSU would answer with three shots of their own from Andre Bigham, Devray Kirkland II and Kalani Laughlin. Bigham would break the ice with a goal at the 8:39 mark. However, two minutes later UMO would answer with a goal of their own. Then with 1:16 left in the quarter Mount Olive added another goal. In total UMO fired off 17 shots in the first period while limiting VSU to five.
Donovan Elmore would tie the game just a minute into the second stanza with a good over the shoulder shot into the top left of the goal. Then two minutes later Jesse Goebel received a pass from his brother John Goebel and slotted a bouncer into the lower right of the goal to make it 3-2. After a penalty on VSU, UMO took advantage of two straight man-up opportunities to retake the lead 4-2 with seven minutes left. A minute later Bigham shot one that just missed the goalie in the bottom right to tie the game. Just two minutes before halftime Miles Jackson managed to get a roller right through the goalies' legs to put VSU back up 5-4. However, as the second quarter had gone UMO managed to answer tying the game just 19 seconds later.
After the high scoring second period it took 10 minutes for either team to find the back of the net when UMO retook the lead 6-5. Then two minutes before the quarter ended Mount Olive would add another goal making it 7-5. UMO would add two more in the third quarter making the Trojan deficit four goals going into the fourth, 9-5. UMO added two more goals in the fourth to start to pull away. The Trojans would get back on the board with a goal from Bigham with a minute left in the game, but VSU would drop the contest 12-6.
Jace Wiggins finished the game with 25 saves on 57 shots faced.
Both teams now move to 1-1. The Trojans stay on the road as they take on Tusculum on February 15 at 12 pm.
