PETERSBURG, VA --The Virginia State women's basketball team scored 32 points off of turnovers on the way to a 67-66 win against the Shaw Bears at home Sunday.
The Trojans (4-2) had two players score in double figures, led by Michaela Lane, who had 16 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Mekayla Furman tacked on 12 points and Skylar White added eight points, four assists and 10 steals.
Gabrielle Gerald pulled down two offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Virginia State, grabbing 11 boards and turning them into 13 second chance points.
Virginia State forced 38 Shaw turnovers while committing 20 themselves in Sunday's game. The Trojans turned those takeaways into 32 points on the other end of the floor. White's 10 steals led the way for Virginia State.
How It Happened
After falling behind 12-10, Virginia State went on a 5-0 run with 2:33 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Furman, to take a 15-12 lead. Shaw then responded to tie things up at 15-15 heading into the second quarter. Virginia State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring eight of its 15 points close to the basket.
Shaw then took a 30-27 lead before Virginia State responding by going on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Sydney Roberts, to take a 33-30 lead. The Bears then came roaring back to take a 34-33 lead heading into halftime.
Shaw continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 39-35 advantage before Virginia State went on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Lane, to grab a 42-39 lead with 6:17 to go in the third. The Bears then rallied to tie it at 48-48 heading into the fourth quarter. Virginia State played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 15 points in the paint.
Virginia State started the fourth with a bang, going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Maya Ellis' three, to seize a 55-48 lead with 8:37 to go in the contest. The Bears narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Trojans still held on for the 67-66 win. Virginia State took advantage of 11 Shaw turnovers in the quarter, scoring 11 points off of those takeaways.
