Virginia State Dominates Paint for the Victory Over West Virginia State

Virginia State Dominates Paint for the Victory Over West Virginia State

In a high-energy, back-and-forth contest, Virginia State managed to fend off a late push from West Virginia State to secure a 90-85 victory. The game featured solid individual performances and a fast-paced style, which saw Virginia State dominate the paint, and capitalize on free-throw opportunities in the second half.

Virginia State's offense was fueled by a well-rounded performance from its starting lineup, with standout performances from Mihjae Hayes, Amesha Miller, and Tiyanna James. The team dominated the paint throughout the game, scoring 60 points inside, and used its 38 fast-break points to control the tempo and keep its opponents on the defensive.

Mihjae Hayes, who played 33 minutes, led Virginia State with 19 points, adding 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Hayes' shooting was efficient, going 6-12 from the field and 6-8 from the free-throw line, helping the team secure key buckets when needed. Amesha Miller contributed with 16 points and 8 rebounds, while Tiyanna James added 15 points and 9 rebounds, providing stability on both ends of the floor.

Virginia State's free-throw shooting also played a crucial role in their win, as they finished the game hitting 19 of 27 attempts (70.4%). In particular, they excelled in the 4th quarter, converting 12 of 14 free throws (85.7%), which helped them close out the game.

The game was tightly contested through the first three quarters, with both teams exchanging runs. Virginia State had a slight edge going into the final period, and it was their strong second-half defense and clutch free-throw shooting that ultimately secured the win. West Virginia State made a push in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to just a few points, but timely baskets and the steady hand at the free-throw line from Virginia State kept them at bay.

West Virginia State had a chance to rally, especially after hitting 5-11 three-pointers in the fourth quarter, but they couldn't overcome the early deficits created by their poor shooting in the first half.

Virginia State's balanced attack, led by Hayes, Miller, and James, along with their dominance in the paint and ability to capitalize on fast breaks, was enough to secure the 90-85 victory. Their efficient free-throw shooting in the second half proved pivotal in keeping West Virginia State from mounting a successful comeback.
