Ettrick, Va (Sept. 28, 2024)- After dropping the last two games the Virginia State University (2-2, 1-0) football team returned to the win column against Fayetteville State (2-2, 1-1) 35-18.
The Broncos would go down the field on their first drive and scored a touchdown after a five-minute drive. The Trojans had to punt on their ensuing drive, but KJ McNeil would pick off a tipped ball to set up Virginia State in plus territory. Then it only took one play for Romelo Williams to find Kevin Gayles in the endzone for an 18-yard touchdown pass.
Then neither team would do much else in the first quarter as the teams would trade punts. To start the second quarter Virginia State would cap off an eight-play drive with Jimmyll Williams scoring a four-yard touchdown. The Broncos would then have to punt but would intercept the following pass from Williams and would set their offense on the VSU 33-yard line. The Broncos would only managed to score a field goal with good field position. Then on the following drive for the Trojans Williams and Gayles were able to connect again this time for a 63-yard touchdown catch and run. With the extra point the score would be 21-10 going into halftime.
With five minutes left in the third quarter VSU would get the ball back from FSU and for the third time Williams and Gayles would hook up on a 68-yard catch and run touchdown to make it 28-10. Then from the end of the third quarter and the first play of the fourth period, Tayshaun Porter caught a 17-yard touchdown pass to make it 35-10. Fayetteville State would get one more touchdown and a two point conversion to make it 35-18 but it was to late for the Broncos to get back into the game.
R. Williams went 10-16 for 231 yards and four touchdowns, with three going to Gayles. J. Williams led the game with 76 rushing yards and added a touchdown. VSU will hit the road to play Johnson C. Smith on October 5 at 2 p.m.
