Ettrick, Va (Aug. 31, 2024)- The Virginia State University Football team will take on Benedict College in the Black College Football Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio.
Last season the Trojans finished the season 8-2 and were only one game from the CIAA Championship game. Benedict went 11-1 and won the SIAC Championship but lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
On the field the Trojans return eight starters on both the offensive and defensive side. After a season ending injury last season starting quarterback Romelo Williams return to lead the offense. Four of the five offensive linemen return to protect Williams. Running back will be by committee with Jimmyll Williams and Rabbit Smith getting the bulk of the carries. Four wide receivers also return to catch the ball.
Defensively the defensive line all returns with Cameron Davis, Abayomi Kesington and Brian Daughtry all will see time on the line. The Linebacker core see Carl Poole Jr. And Defensive Rookie of the Year KJ McNeil. In the secondary the team will look to replace Willie Drew who got an undrafted free agent deal with the Carolina Panthers. Head Coach Dr. Henry Frazier, III brought in two transfer corners with D-1 experience in LaVonte Gater and Kenny Bennett.
The Black College Football Hall of Fame game will be broadcasted on the NFL Network and on radio nationally by Westwood one. Local radio station WVST 91.3 will also be broadcasting the game.
