Trojans swept by Big Blue in three game series

Bluefield, W. Va. (Apr. 21, 2024)- The Virginia State University (11-27) baseball team were swept in a three-game series against the Big Blue of Bluefield State (25-14). 

GAME 1 VSU 1 BSU 17 

  • Jimmyll Williams hit a one out single the stole second before a TJ McGowan single scored him. 

  • Bluefield State however would take over the game adding six runs in the bottom of the first and fifth innings. They also added a run in the second and four in the sixth 

  • McGowan accounted for two of the three hits the Trojans had 

GAME 2 VSU 9 BSU 13 

  • Bluefield State got on the board first with a two-run homerun in the second inning 

  • The Trojans managed to get one back in the third after Norman Jackson scored on a pass ball, but the Big Blue got that run back in their half of the inning 

  • In the fourth Jaron Ward started off with a double moved to third on a sac bunt moved him to third. Avante Banks managed to get him in with a suicide squeeze 

  • Bluefield State then managed to score nine runs in fifth inning and one in the sixth 

  • In the seventh the Trojans tried to comeback with seven runs, but it was too late. Gene Ligon, Jr., David Johnson, Daniel Smith, Ward, Victor Johnson and Justus Crawley all managed to get RBI's in the inning 

GAME 3 VSU 5 BSU 10 

  • Ward would hit his first homerun in a Trojans uniform as he put VSU up 2-0 early in the first. Jamari Pooler hit an RBI single to make it 3-0 

  • However, in the second and third inning the Big Blue put up 10 runs and the Trojans only scored one run in the sixth and seventh 

  • In the sixth Williams singled up the middle to score Crawley in the sixth and Pooler hit a homerun in the seventh 

The team will play Mount Union on Monday April 22 at 3 pm.
