ETTRICK, VA (2/21/24)-Your Virginia State Women's basketball team went against Bowie State university for the second time this season. Scrappy defense and some late game heroics helped the Trojans walk away with a nine-point win and their 21st win on the season.
After each team went scoreless for three minutes BSU scored the first bucket on a three point make. With five minutes left in the first quarter Mihjae Hayes scored VSU's first bucket on a lay up through contact. Swarming defense and a transition three cut Bowie State's lead to just two. A mid-range score by Raija Todd tied the game at seven and a lay up by Tatiana Jones gave the Trojans their first lead of the night. Amesha Miller ended the first quarter with a buzzer beater putting the Trojans up by four. Miller ended a scoring drought in the second quarter with a made layup. The scoring picked up from there as the Trojans went on a 10-0 run. Miller ended the half sending BSU's Anii Harris' shot back.
BSU broke the ice to start the 3rd quarter with a made layup. The Trojans suffered some mental lapses, it was a low scoring quarter and Bowie State went on a 5-0 run. Despite that, the Trojans held onto a six-point lead heading into the 4th quarter.
Bowie State was threatening a 4th quarter comeback. A made three by BSU's Jayla Irvin made it a three-point game. Kamryn Anthony fouled Irvin on a 3-point attempt. Irvin made all three of her attempts at the line bringing BSU within a basket of tying the game. Tiyanna James pocketed a corner three to bring the lead back up to seven. Mekayla Furman made a timely steal with a minute left in the game. Furman then went to the line to knock down two free throws. The Trojans would won it 54-43 in a game in a game where they held BSU to just twelve points at the end of first quarter. Forward Amesha Miller led the team in points and assists finishing the game with a 12-point SIXTEEN rebound double double. The Trojans next game is against Virginia Union at 1pm on Saturday February 24th.
