Trojans split Saturday double header with Mansfield

Ettrick, Va. (Feb. 17, 2024)- The Virginia State University baseball team returned to the diamond and split with Mansfield dropping game 1, 7-4 in 10 innings and winning game 2, 4-2. 

GAME 1 VSU 4 MANSFIELD 7 /10 INNINGS 

  • Mansfield got on the board in the first after three singles. In the bottom of the second after getting two outs Jody Morris walked, Avante Banks walked, and Victor Johnson walked to load the bases. Norman JAckson then hit a double to clear the bases but was thrown out at third to end the inning 

  •  Neither team would get a run until the bottom of the fifth when Jimmyll Williams walked and stole second. Christian Henderson reached on an error and advanced to second with Williams coming around to score making it 4-1 

  • In the top of the seventh the Mountaineers got the leadoff hitter on; the next batter flew out to center to get the first out. The third hitter walked, and the next batter hit a RBI single. Joseph Hastings got the next batter to fly out to first, but a wild pitch let the tying run move up to third. Then another RBI single would tie the game at 4 

  • In the top of the 10th Mansfield would walk followed by a strikeout for the first four batters. A double brought in the runner on a second and a 2 RBI single scored the other two runners. In the bottom of the inning the Mountaineers struck out the side to win game 1 

GAME 2 VSU 4 MANSFIELD 2 

  • Henderson sat down the side in the first three innings. 

  •  In the bottom half of the first Johnson hit a double and advanced to third on a pass ball in the bottom half. Jackson hit an RBI groundout to pitcher in the bottom of the third inning Williams got on a fielder's choice stole second and came around on an error by the pitcher to score  

  • Top of the fourth Mansfield got their first baserunner on a double but the next two batters got out before an RBI single got them on the board, 2-1. The Mansfield pitching staff got the Trojans down in order for the first time in game two in the bottom half 

  • Both teams would put up a run in the fifth inning, The Trojans took advantage of two errors to score their run and adding an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Jamari Pooler scored on a passed ball 

  • Henderson let the two first men reach base but left them stranded to secure the win 

The teams will return to action tomorrow for a double header starting at 1 pm and game 2 scheduled for 4 pm.
