Trojans dominate Bulldogs

Bowie, Md. (Jan. 31. 2024)- The Virginia State University men's basketball team upended the Bulldogs of Bowie State 68-40 in a game where 12 different Trojans scored.  

In the first four minutes of the game, VSU went down two, 6-4 with neither team shooting the ball efficiently early. Four straight points for Izeah Parker gave Virginia State their first lead of the night at the 14:23 mark at 8-6. Imhotep (Tap) George scored five straight points to give VSU an 11-point advantage, 18-7 and then after eight minutes without a field goal Bowie State answered with their own three to make the score 18-10 with 9:28 left in the half.  

Chris Hampton and Jonathan Norfleet hit threes at 6:43 and 5:24 mark to give VSU their largest lead to that point at 27-13. The Bulldogs battled back to make the score 31-19 with just 50 seconds left in the half. However, VSU scored the final four points of the half to go into the break, up 35-19. 

Kendall Bynum scored the first five points of the second half and Dajour Rucker would add a layup at the 15:11 mark to continue the Trojans run from the end of the first half making the score 42-19. The lead would continue to grow as it would get up to 26 points (50-24) with just over 11 and a half minutes left in the half. With 7:29 left in the game, Bowie State made their 10th field goal of the game, making the score 56-30. 

Bynum was the only player in double figures 14 points, Parker contributed eight points and Norfleet and George both had seven points. With the win VSU improves to 10-11 overall and 5-6 in conference play while the Bulldogs drops to 7-15 and 2-9 in conference play. The team will return home to take on Elizabeth City State University on Saturday February 3 at 4 pm.
